The Savior’s Gospel
John 3:1-15
Sunday, January 8, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
One cannot fully understand the motive of Nicodemus without reading 2:23-25. The context is Jerusalem and more importantly, it was Passover. The curious crowds followed Jesus because He performed miracles. He recognized their faith was superficial. One of the 70, one of the religious Sanhedrin, came to Jesus at night. In this clandestine conversation Jesus explains His Gospel.
Sermon in a Sentence: Only the Savior’s Gospel will quiet our conscience and hoist us to Heaven. Worship God who has mercy on your soul.
3:1-2 A Sincere but Cautious Inquiry
Notice the important phrase, he “came to Jesus by night.”
3:3-8 A Serious Detour into Deeper Things
Salvation or regeneration is a work of the Spirit, not achieved by human effort or planning.
3:9-15 God’s Gracious Solution to the Poison of Sin
John illustrates the death of Jesus to elicit a response of Faith and Worship.
