East-West is a missionary sending organization that focuses on the parts of the world where the Gospel is the least known. Only 1.7 cents of every dollar given to world missions goes to work amongst the least-reached people groups of the world. These Unreached People Groups (UPG's) constitute nearly 3 billion people, about 40% of the world's population. Yet 98.3% of missions giving is still directed towards work in other parts of the world where the Gospel is already being proclaimed.
Unreached people groups, (also referred to as "The spiritually darkest places" by East-West) are unreached for very good reasons. Political barriers, cultural barriers, resistance to "new religions", suspicion of outsiders and more all complicate reaching these people groups with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
In just the Russian state of Dagestan, for example, there are 12 distinct people groups in which there is not a single known believer, there is not a single verse of the Bible translated into their own language, and there is not a single believer in the whole world who speaks their language who could bring the Gospel to them. Every one of these UPGs has their own unique language and their own distinct culture. These are the kinds of people groups around the world that East-West is targeting.
Debbie and I, founded on our 27 years overseas with the IMB serving amongst unreached people groups ourselves, are heading the Member Care department at East-West. Living overseas, learning languages, and especially trying to minister effectively in a politically tense, religiously intolerant culture that is resistant to the Gospel, is extremely stressful and exhausting for our staff. Member Care provides the pastoral care, encouragement, counseling and resources our people need to be able to thrive in their ministry settings.
