A Friend of Sinners
Luke 7:36-50
Sunday, July 3, 2022
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
On the heels of The Beatitudes, Luke gives us an up close and personal look at one who is poor, hungry, weeping, and hated by her community. She is indeed the kind of Kingdom citizen Jesus is after. The proper way to read Luke is in light of each preceding chapter.
Sermon in a Sentence: Saving faith responds with heartfelt surrender. Confidently come to Christ and experience forgiveness.
There are three people in this story:
A Sinful Woman Who Knew She Could Not Save Herself 7:36-39
Notice she doesn’t have a name and she doesn’t say a word?
A Proud Pharisee Who Thinks He Saved Himself 7:41-46
What theological point is being made in v42?
A Merciful Friend of Sinners Who Saves People from Themselves 7:47-50
“Who is this who even forgives sin?”
