Devils Disarmed and Defeated
Colossians 2:6-15
August 3, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
Colossians 2:6 marks a turning point in the letter. Typical of Paul’s writing style, the second half of his letters feature how to put Nikes on theology! That is what he means when he says, “Walk in Christ” in v6. The false teachers in Colossae were trying to “take them captive” or put them into a spiritual stronghold. They were teaching the Christians to add human traditions, and secret philosophies to their faith in Jesus in order to go to heaven. This paragraph pulls the curtains back and exposes the disarmed and defeated devils of the dark kingdom.
Sermon Idea: When evil devils assumed they had won, Jesus stripped them of their pompous power. Let no one tell you otherwise.
2:6-8 The Tremendous Responsibility of Thinking Biblically About Yourself
“Rooted and Built Up” are agricultural and architectural images.
Strongholds in the world are a constant menace to the Christian.
2:9-15 The Outstanding Benefits of Being Rescued from Darkness
V10 in Christ, you are now a citizen of the Kingdom.
V11-12 in Christ, you have new affections.
V13-14 in Christ, you are forgiven of all your spiritual debts,
V15 At the cross evil devils were disarmed and defeated.
