I’m Going Fishing
John 21:1-19
June 22, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
In the final scenes of John’s Gospel Thomas declares the Deity of Jesus, “My Lord, and my God!” We also read John’s purpose for writing his Gospel, “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” But there is still some unfinished business with Peter. Peter has denied Jesus three times. So, Jesus will provide an opportunity for Peter to express his devotion to Him. Jesus had a purpose for Peter’s life, but not the old wavering under pressure Peter. God will probe deep into our heart to test our commitment to Him.
Sermon Idea: The hope of forgiveness invites us back to Jesus.

Verse 4, a new day is dawning!
Verse 5, an expression of intimacy between a parent and their child.

18-19 The sobering test for Peter.
