Eyes Opened and Hearts Ablaze!
Luke 24:13-35
Sunday, March 31, 2024
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
It is interesting how fear can swallow hope. Our physical health can trigger fear. Losing possessions or people we love can activate fear inside of us. The disciples knew about fear. Following the crucifixion, they were confused and fearful. Although Jesus had promised that God’s plan included His death, burial, and resurrection, their hope was hijacked because of the empty tomb. God does not want you to fear but to find eternal hope in His Son, Jesus. The empty tomb, the witness of angels, and the scores of human witnesses prove He is alive!
Sermon in a Sentence: God has power over life and death. Don’t be slow to believe.
Three particulars stood out to me on the road to Emmaus:
13-24 Cleo’s PTSD
A Crucifixion was horrifying to watch.
Cleopas lost hope because: “He wasn’t in the tomb.”
25-27 A Resurrected Savior Preaching
“You foolish ones and slow to believe!”
Jesus explained from the Old Testament that He was their redeemer.
28-35 Eyes Opened and Hearts Ablaze
These words translate that God was helping them see His work through Jesus.
What sorts of emotions do you think they felt while having this meal with Jesus?
