The Shepherd and His Flock
Mark 6:30-44
February 15, 2026
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
We now arrive at chapter six and a story we have heard from Children’s Church. The best way to read this story is with an eye on the Old Testament. The allusions of this wilderness feast point us back to Moses and his wilderness wanderings. Please note that Mark does not record any responses of the people in this miracle, not even the crowds. There is a reason for that. This is not about the people. We are to strictly observe what Mark reveals about Jesus.
I found three observations about Jesus:
6:30-34 Our Compassionate Shepherd
He has compassion for them because they have no direction.
The first prerequisite of discipleship is to be with Jesus.
6:35-38 Our Wise Teacher
The desolate places are where God taught His people.
The situation is beyond the control of the disciples (on purpose!).
6:39-44 Our Sufficient Provider
“He looked up to heaven. . .”
Every ministry at FBCA is by God’s dramatic intervention.
Sermon Idea: When we trust in God’s provision it will radically impact the way we live.
