Sunday Sermon – May 31, 2026- “Mission Accomplished” – Mark 16:1-8

May 31, 2026

Mission Accomplished
Mark 16:1-8
May 31, 2026
Dr. Kelly B. Burton

We made it! The last sermon of the Gospel of Mark. The ending is something none of us suspected. The women at the tomb come as if Jesus is still dead (they bring spices for His body!). They allow their fear to drown their faith. In verse 8, they ran away from the tomb, seized with fear and trembling, and they said nothing to anyone. What is Mark up to here in the Resurrection story? I have the answer. You will need your Bible for this.

Main Idea: Mission Accomplished: Jesus has risen from the dead. Don’t be afraid to tell someone.

16:1-5 A Tender Trap for Unsuspecting Church Members
The women are totally oblivious to the resurrection.

16:6-8 Special Comfort for Christians Who Need A Second Chance
The words of the young man are the sweet spot of the text.

16:14-20 Unfinished Business Left for the Modern-Day Church Member
“And they went out and preached everywhere.”
