Dr. Kelly B. Burton
It will be helpful for you to read Mark 4:34-41 to better appreciate Mark chapter 5. Much like Jesus calms the violent wind, He is able to calm the chaotic windstorms of the human soul. This poor man known only as the demoniac, is full of rage. He is restless, sleepless, and dangerous. Mark graphically explains how strong Satan’s grip was on him by telling us he was held captive by over 6,000 demons! However, the darkness cannot overcome the terrifying presence of God in Jesus. Jesus breaks the grip of demonic power and calms the chaos in the human soul.
1-13 A Chilling Reminder of the Grip of Demonic Power
The Gerasenes or Gergesa, is Gentile territory.
“Legion” is a military term designating the largest group of soldiers.
14-20 The Terrifying Presence of Divine Power
When the herdsmen saw the man in his right mind, at peace, and learning from Jesus, they were terrified. Why?
This restored and transformed man becomes the first missionary preacher sent out by Jesus!
Sermon Idea: Jesus breaks the grip of demonic power and calms the chaos in the human soul.
