Patterns of God’s Grace
Mark 1:40-45
January 4, 2026
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
These six verses are supposed to help us see another pattern of God’s grace. This poor leper displays all the right actions to be a follower of Christ. He takes a risk emerging from the crowd of people to implore Jesus to help him. Luke tells us this guy faceplanted in front of Jesus because he knew He could make him better. When everyone else ran the other way, Jesus was moved with pity and reached out and touched him. Notice the words “he was made clean.” In the Bible we never see someone healed from leprosy. Instead, they are cleansed. In other words, his leprosy provides a symbol of our sin that must be cleansed. Plead for what you need the most, forgiveness.
Sermon Idea: Everyone needs a fresh start. Plead for what you need the most, forgiveness!
1:40-45 A Compassionate Touch from Christ
Leprosy was visibly dreadful.
This man was cut off. No friends, no family, no church, no hope.
But Jesus was moved with pity.
He felt the leper’s humiliation.
