Who Is This Fellow?
John 5:1-18
Sunday, January 15, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
The joy we have of working through a Gospel together is that we see from a wider lens what the author is aiming to do. The apostle John is showing us Jesus as powerful King equal to His Father. We should not be too quick to focus on the human characters in the Bible. They are not the aim of the authors. Jesus is!
Sermon in a Sentence: Deeds of regal power show us Jesus is in every way equal to His Father. Don’t squander His mercy.
There are four scenes in this story by the pool:
i. A Paltry Perception of God’s Power 5:1-9a
“Sir, I have no one to put me in the pool.”
ii. A Pitiful Response to God’s Power 5:9b-13
“Who is this Fellow?”
iii. A Warning About Sin and the Sabbath 5:14-18
“Stop sinning so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.” (See 1 Co. 11:29-30).
iv. An Invitation for All to Listen to Christ 5:25-29
“..an hour is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God.”
