Shadows of Better Things to Come
Hebrews 9:24-28
May 11, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
Today we return to the Hebrews series, particularly to chapter 9. For our benefit, the author explains the Old Testament Day of Atonement whereby the high priest entered the Holy of Holies to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people. He was their mediator. But the entire sacrificial system of the Old Testament was only a shadow, a model, an example of what was to come in Christ. Jesus is our faithful Priest who offered Himself once for all and is presently interceding for us on our behalf. He is coming back to rescue all those who are eagerly watching for His return. Are you?
Sermon Idea: The penalty for our sins has been removed. The promise of our rescue is on the way.
Here are three appearances of Christ meant to keep you from falling away from the faith:
9:24 The Present Appearing of Our Faithful Mediator
This is a reason why the ascension of Jesus is so important.
9:26 The Once and For All Appearance of Our Savior
This appearance takes us back to the cross where the penalty of our sins was removed once and for all!
9:28 The Future Appearance of Our Resurrected King
When the Israelites watched their high priest emerge from the tent, they knew God had accepted their sacrifices.
