Naked and Exposed
Hebrews 4:11-16
Sunday, October 16, 2022
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
The greatest disappointment imaginable for a Christian is to get tripped up by some sin and not reach the finish line. Hebrews speaks of the finish line as “rest.” The rest God is talking about is rest from our service to God down here. Since Hebrews is the most Jewish book of the New Testament, we are to avoid be counted among those in Exodus and Numbers. To our great advantage, we have a high priest who has pioneered the way to the finish line. Let us look to Him when we are tempted to quit.
Sermon in a Sentence: Mercy and grace are what we need to finish our assignment from God. Stay with Christ and you won’t fall away.
God gives us three clear instructions to avoid falling out of the faith:
4:11-13 Make every effort to live out your calling
Don’t be like the Exodus Saints who gave up.
4:14-15 Keep your promise to Him who promised to keep you
We ought to finish as well as we began.
4:16 Don’t be afraid to be found out by God; He wants you to ask for help
We are naked and exposed by the Word of God. There is no fooling God.
