Approaching the Cross
Luke 23:26-47
Sunday, September 11, 2022
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
The love and compassion of Christ exude from the pages of the crucifixion. In the midst of His sufferings His selflessness emerges. He is more concerned for others than Himself as He approaches His cross. He even saves a criminal while hanging on His cross! Notice His trust in the Father. Take up your cross, trust God in every circumstance, and think of others more highly than yourself.
Sermon in a Sentence: On the cross Jesus billboards the love of God. Bear your cross and follow after Christ.
There are three sets of Cross Words that are worthy of our attention this morning:
1. 23:34 “Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.”
Even hanging from His cross Jesus was not bitter.
2. 23:43 “I assure you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
He is saving people even hanging from His cross.
3. 23:46 “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”
Psalm 31:5, a nightly prayer learned by the Jews.
