What Kind of King is He?
Mark 1:14-35
Sunday, August 27, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
We see what happens to people who obey God and make a difference in their communities for Jesus: “John was arrested…” Mark 1:14. Can you picture a breaking White House press conference? Something big just happened and the world needs to be aware of it! “The kingdom of God just broke into our world and Jesus is the King!” But what kind of King is He? Mark sketches Him out to be an unusual rabbi, an astounding teacher, and a compassionate healer.
Sermon in a Sentence: Following Christ demands an all-encompassing change of life. Put Christ first!
Here are three claims Mark makes about Him:
i. An Unusual Rabbi 1:16-20
Doesn’t it strike you as odd that the King of God’s kingdom goes to the Sea of Galilee to find His disciples?
ii. An Astounding Teacher 1:21-28
There were hundreds of teachers before Jesus. But the demonic spirits know this One is different!
iii. A Compassionate Healer 1:29-35
Notice the many interruptions in the day of Jesus. These interruptions teach us something about faith, the lack of faith, or about theology.
