The Spirit-Filled Marriage
Ephesians 5:22-33
Sunday, August 6, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
To first-century listeners these appeals to the wife were nothing controversial. We can almost see the congregation nodding in agreement. The controversy begins in verse 25 with the husband. None of the household codes in first century Ephesus commanded the husband to love his wife. Even more radical is the example Paul lays out for the Christian husband: “. . .love your wives, as Christ loved the church.” Paul moves from the expected to the unexpected. In other words, the emphasis in Ephesians 5 is upon the husband’s responsibilities to his wife.
Sermon in a Sentence: Marriage exists to show the world the love of Christ. Model love and respect for each other.
Here are two descriptions of a Spirit-Filled Marriage:
5:22-24 A Rare Femininity
Divine Design?
She is not to submit if he leads into sin.
5:25-33 A Radical Masculinity
Sacrificial, Loving, Tender Leadership.
Christ’s love for His church is your paradigm for loving your wife.
