An Illustration of Worship
Mark 14:1-11
April 26, 2026
Dr. Kelly B. Burton

On Wednesday of Passion Week, only two days away from His cross, Jesus went to the house of Simon the leper in Bethany. Mark is up to something in chapter 14:1-11. He intends to emphasize the actions of the poor woman by putting her story in the middle of a calculated ploy to execute Jesus and a premeditated betrayal by one of His own disciples! The woman illustrates to the church the proper attitude of worship.

Main Idea: Jesus remembers our worship if it is pure, costly, and spilled out on Him alone.

Notice these three movements in the text and how Mark emphasizes the woman in the middle:

✓ A Calculated Execution 14:1-2
The Scribes and Chief Priests calculate how to arrest Jesus away from the Passover crowds.

✓ An Extravagant Demonstration of Sacrifice and Love 14:3-9
This is poor unnamed woman schools the Church on the right attitude of worship.

✓ A Premeditated Betrayal 14:10-11
Judas Iscariot spent the last three and a half years with Jesus and the others
