The Glory of God in the Face of Christ
Colossians 1:15-20
July 13, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
This is a very moving passage of Scripture. It is actually a hymn to Jesus. You will understand it better if you keep the argument of the letter in mind. Paul is arguing that Jesus, not angels, not secret knowledge, reconciles hostile people back to God. Paul is calling the Colossian Christians to remember and experience what they have in Jesus Christ. The same hands that created the universe are the same hands that were pierced so you could be saved.
Sermon Idea: Jesus holds all things together. Be steadfast and set your mind on Christ.
Here are two inspiring incentives to be think about Jesus:
1:15-17 Jesus Christ is the Head of Creation Visible and Invisible
“Firstborn” should be interpreted from a biblical perspective.
The Creator has not forgotten the creation.
1:18-20 Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church Reconciling Hostile Sinners to God
Everything that God is, Jesus is.
Paul knew something had gone terrible wrong. The world is not out of control; it is indeed out of order!
