The Crucifixion
John 19
June 8, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
At the conclusion of Jesus’s high priestly prayer in John 17, Jesus went out of the upper room and led His trepid disciples across the Brook Kidron. They entered the Garden of Gethsemane, a familiar place to pray. Judas came as well leading a group of Pharisees and Roman soldiers there to arrest Jesus. In chapter 18 John recounts the Jewish phase of Jesus’ trial and the Roman phase as well. Everything was going exactly according to God’s plan. Even in chapter 19 at His crucifixion, don’t miss how Jesus is in perfect control of everything, even giving up His Spirit at death.
Sermon Idea: Jesus carried the awful consequences of human sin; marvel at His love.
19:1-3 Divine Sovereignty Despite Human Depravity
Pilate, his soldiers, and the Jewish leaders show the extent of human depravity.
19:16-27 Uncommon Compassion Beneath Physical Agony
Jesus fulfilled the traditional role of the eldest son providing care for His mother.
19:28-30 Infinite Forgiveness in Exchange for Sacrificial Death
Jesus is portrayed by John as totally in control of every event in chapter 19.
