Go On to Maturity
Hebrews 5:11-6:12
April 27, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
Hebrews 5 and 6 pose particularly sticky problems for Bible readers. Some believe these chapters lend support to the belief that a Christian can lose his salvation. Your pastor does not buy into that interpretation. The author uses warning language in the strongest possible terms because the original readers were not making any progress in their faith. They had great potential, but their affections were sluggish. They are in great danger of never maturing and discovering the treasures of the Christian Gospel.
Sermon Idea: Those who never get beyond the beginning will not last until the end.
Here are three incentives to go on to maturity:
5:11-14 Slow Progress Indicates Sluggish Affections
Those who never get beyond the ABC’s of the faith, never make any progress towards maturity.
6:1-8 Thorns and Thistles Reveal Dead Faith
This is a warning in the strongest possible terms.
6:9-12 Perseverance Leads to Hope Until the End
It is a sad fact that some of the most active church members lack assurance.
