A Warning Against Drifting Affections
Hebrews 3:7-19
April 6, 2025
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
One advantage to teaching and preaching through Hebrews today is because the original readers were in the church. They were a Jewish community. Keep this in mind as you read Hebrews and listen to the preaching. To be specific, there were three groups of people in the church: some had heard the Gospel and believed unto salvation. Others believed, but they had not committed themselves to Christianity. (This group knew the facts of the Gospel. They knew about Jesus intellectually. But their affections have not been convinced so they remained spiritually lost). Still others in this original church community heard the Gospel but were just not convinced to do anything about it. Therefore, in chapter 3 we have three warnings to the church.
Sermon Idea: Sin is alive and aggressive. Keep a close eye on your affections.
I see three warnings in Hebrews Chapter 3:
3:7-11 A Warning from the Holy Spirit
Knowing his Jewish audience, the writer cites Psalm 95.
Even true believers sometimes struggle with trusting and obeying God.
3:12-15 A Warning from a Brother of Another Era
Do you love what you formerly hated, and hate what you formerly loved?
Faithful spouses and friends help us to persevere.
3:16-19 A Warning from the Rebels in the Desert
These verses warn us against the sinfulness of sin.
Keep a close eye on your affections.
