The Antidote to Anxiety
Matthew 6:19-34
September 29, 2024
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
We must remember as we read Matthew 6 that this was not originally written to us. It was written to the people of the first century; particularly to a large crowd of people standing on the side of a tall mountain listening to Jesus. Some had already become true followers of Jesus. Others were there merely out of interest in Him. Yet all of them shared the same fears and anxieties. The majority of them were very poor. I imagine them as rugged individualists who were concerned about their next meal, clothes for their children, taxes, and the politically charged climate where they lived. With that in mind we find ourselves understanding them more than we first imagined. To all of us Jesus says, Stop worrying so much about so many things. Search for the stuff that is good for your souls.
